It is the eighth category among the Twelve Categories in the classification system of Taoist scriptures. Taoist Doctrine Essentials·Meaning of the Ten Parts interprets "Fang" (method) as a specific way or approach, and "Fa" (rule) as regulations and measures, clarifying that there are specific ways and regulations for practice and self-cultivation.

Thus, it states: "Methods refer to practices such as preserving the Three and upholding the One, controlling the spirit and restraining the soul."
