The Miao Daoyi 苗道一

Miao Daoyi lived during the Zhida reign period of the Yuan Dynasty (1308-1311). He was bestowed the honorific title of "Ninghe Chizheng Mingsu Zhenren" (Zhenren, meaning "True Person," is a high-ranking honorific for accomplished Taoists in ancient China).

He succeeded Zhang Zhixian as the "Xuanmen Yandao Dazongshi" (the Grand Master of Propagating the Dao in the Mysterious Gate) and took on the role of leader of the Quanzhen School (a major sect of Taoism).

In October of the second year of the Tianli reign (1329), he was ordered by the imperial court to hold a jiao (a grand Taoist ritual for praying, blessing, or expiating sins) at Changchun Palace (a key Taoist temple of the Quanzhen School). In the first year of the Zhishun reign (1330; note: there is a possible typo in the original text, as "133" should be "1330"), a gold "Shenxian Fuming Yin" (the Immortal Talisman Decree Seal, a sacred seal symbolizing Taoist authority) was cast and bestowed upon Daoyi, the leader of the Quanzhen School.

In the first year of the Yuantong reign (1333), he was specially promoted to the title of "Shenxian Zhangjiao Ninghe Dazhenren" (the Great True Person of Ninghe, the Immortal Leader of the Quanzhen School).

He served as the leader of the Quanzhen School for four years, from the second year of the Tianli reign to the first year of the Yuantong reign (1329-1333).
