Mu Shoumiaoyuan was originally from Zuocheng County, Weizhou (now part of Henan Province).

She studied under Chen Zhijian and Chen Shou'en, and was a female Quanzhen Taoist priest (nüguan).

Under her teachers' instruction day and night, she practiced the esoteric methods of the Supreme Heavenly Heart and mastered the celestial divination techniques.

She was also proficient in medical skills; there was no illness she could not cure, and all her treatments proved effective.

After entering the Taoist community, she donated her family's inherited farmland to establish the Xingfu Altar (a site for Taoist rituals). Later, she built Wuzhen Nunnery, and a large number of people became her followers.
