Nie Shaoyuan was a native of She County (now part of Anhui Province) during the reign of the Last Emperor of the Southern Tang Dynasty. His courtesy name was Bozu, and he styled himself "Wumingzi" (Master of No Name).
He authored works including Zongxing Ji (Record of Ancestral Nature), Xiuzhen Mijue (Secret Formula for Cultivating Perfection), and Wumingzi Caotang Ji (Record of Master Wumingzi’s Thatched Cottage).
