The Ritual of Conferring the Natural Tally of the Dongxuan Lingbao

Author unknown; it is believed to have been compiled around the Northern and Southern Dynasties. Recorded as The Ritual of Conferring the Natural Tally of Lingbao (one scroll) in Catalogue of the Middle Covenant Texts of Lingbao, it refers to this very text.

The existing version is included in the Dongxuan Section (Mysterious Grotto Section) of the Daozang under the category of Rituals and Ceremonies.

This text describes the ritual procedures for Taoist priests to confer the Precious Talismans of the Supreme Dongxuan Lingbao Jade Script True Scripture and The Five Supreme True Daoist Texts of the Supreme Lingbao. Its key rituals include the master offering prayers and declarations, the threefold sipping of cinnabar-consecrated water to seal the covenant, conferring the tally and contract, bestowing the scriptures, and paying homage to deities in the ten directions—all reflecting the orthodox transmission traditions of Zhengyi Dao.
