The Pan Taimu 潘太牧

Pan Taimu (?–1685) was a native of Wuxing (now part of Jiangsu Province) who lived during the transition from the late Ming Dynasty to the early Qing Dynasty. He also went by the name Deng Sheng; his courtesy name was Muxin, and his literary name was Muxinzi.

As recorded in Jingai Xindeng (The Lamp in the Golden Hut): In the late Ming Dynasty, he studied under the abbot of Tianzhu Guan (Tianzhu Taoist Temple) and was in charge of firewood-gathering duties, but the abbot did not value him. In the 2nd year of the Shunzhi reign (1645), Tuimi Shanren (Hermit of Seclusion and Secrecy, referring to Sheng Qingya mentioned in previous contexts) came to the mountain, and Pan Taimu then served him as a teacher.

In the 3rd year of the Kangxi reign (1664), he secretly received the Great Precepts from Tuimi Shanren. In the 9th year of the Kangxi reign (1670), he followed the order of Jinzhu Laoren (Old Man of Golden Tower, also a title of Sheng Qingya) and traveled from Tianzhu Mountain to Jinge Mountain (Golden Canopy Mountain), never returning to secular life afterward.

Pan Taimu passed away at Tianzhu Guan in the 24th year of the Kangxi reign (1685). He was the 9th-generation precept-master of the Longmen Sect (Dragon Gate Sect) of Taoism.
