The Pan Yangyin 潘阳因

Pan Yangyin (1736-1823) was a native of Hucheng (now part of Henan Province) during the Qianlong and Jiaqing reigns of the Qing Dynasty, and his literary name was Liuyang.

As recorded in Jingai Xindeng (The Lamp of the Heart at Jingai Mountain): Since childhood, he had admired metaphysics and vowed never to marry. At the age of 16, he went to Jingai Mountain and studied under Preceptor Lanyun (a Taoist master specializing in precepts).

When he was 17, he underwent the capping ceremony (a traditional coming-of-age ritual for males in ancient China) and changed his name. Later, he traveled to Dengyun Guan (Ascending Cloud Temple) in Wulin (an ancient name for Hangzhou). Qian Yang'ao, upon forming a close bond with him, persuaded him to stay.

He had a passion for composing poems and verses. However, he later burned all his writings and wandered around the country as a itinerant Taoist.

In July of the third year of the Daoguang reign (1823), he passed away at Cangya (Green Cliff) on Mount Emei at the age of 87.
