Pan Yishan was a native of Dongbo, Wuxing (now part of Zhejiang Province) during the Qing Dynasty.

His original given name was Yin, and his courtesy name was Sujing.

Born into a poor family, he lost his father at an early age. Later, he followed his uncle and became a novice Priest at Shuiyue Nunnery in Hangzhou, yet he had a keen interest in metaphysics.

At that time, Meng Yiyang from Helin Taoist Abbey was renowned far and wide. Thus, Pan Yishan went to become his disciple. Meng Yiyang then gave him his current name (Yishan) and taught him Taoist doctrines and practices. Before he turned ten, Pan Yishan had fully mastered the essential principles of Taoism. His master Meng then performed the capping ceremony for him and successively conferred the Three Precepts upon him.

Throughout his life, Pan Yishan was solemn and rarely indulged in laughter or casual talk. He maintained a sincere and pure mind, and he blended in with the common people without seeking fame or attention, never showing off any extraordinary abilities. In the Taoist community, he was respectfully addressed as "Venerable Master Pan".
