Pan Zhonghua was a figure of the early Yuan Dynasty.

He styled himself "Xuanzhongzi" and "Song’an" (Pine Hut). From a young age, he left home to become a Taoist monk and studied under Master Qu of Yizhen.

Wanyan, the Great Master in charge of Taoist affairs, praised Pan Zhonghua for his adherence to Taoist precepts and his demeanor reminiscent of the virtuous scholars of ancient times. He bestowed upon Pan the title "Great Master of Penetrating Truth, Clarifying Righteousness, and Calming Virtue," appointed him to oversee Biyun Palace on Yiyang Mountain in Yidu Circuit, and granted him a purple robe trimmed with gold.

However, Pan Zhonghua believed that these official duties and honors were not sufficient for him to fully dedicate himself to the practice of Taoism. Thus, he retired to Weiyang, built a thatched hut in the mountains, and devoted himself entirely to Taoist cultivation there.

He named this thatched hut "Biyun An" (Biyun Hut) to show that he did not forget the appointment he had received at Yiyang Mountain.

He planted green pines beside the hut, so he also styled himself "Song’an" (Pine Hut)—using the pine tree as a metaphor for unyielding integrity that remains evergreen even in the harsh cold of winter.

His resolve to study Taoism grew stronger, his attainments in the Dao flourished day by day, and he attracted a large number of disciples.
