The Qi Hui 歧晖

Paul Peng

Qi Hui (558–630)

Qi Hui, a native of Jingzhao (present-day Xi'an City) who lived from the Northern Zhou Dynasty to the early Tang Dynasty, later changed his name to Pingding.
In the fifth year of the Tianhe era of Emperor Wu of the Northern Zhou Dynasty (570), he became a Daoist priest. Not long after, when Emperor Wu carried out the screening and suppression of Buddhism and Daoism (to regulate religious institutions), Qi Hui returned to secular life.
When the Sui Dynasty was founded, he resumed his identity as a Daoist priest. According to records in Stele Inscriptions of Real Immortals Through the Ages at the Scripture-Lecturing Platform of Zhongnan Mountain and Records of Immortals (Volume 29): He studied under Master Su of Tongdao Abbey and was taught the scriptures and doctrines of the "Three Grottoes" (a core classification system of Daoist texts).
At the end of the Sui Dynasty, when Li Yuan (later Emperor Gaozu of the Tang Dynasty) raised troops (to found the Tang Dynasty), Qi Hui provided strong support. Emperor Gaozu highly admired his virtue and issued an imperial edict to renovate the altars and buildings of Louguan Abbey.
Later, the emperor personally visited the temple courtyard, revered Laozi (the founder of Daoism) as the "Sacred Ancestor," renamed Louguan Abbey "Zongsheng Palace" (Palace of Venerating the Sage), expanded the palace gates on a grand scale, and held ritual fasts and sacrifices with great ceremony.
Qi Hui passed away due to illness in July of the fourth year of the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty (630) at the age of 73.
