Qian Laiyu was a native of Yuhang during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty.

In the 50th year of the Qianlong reign (1785), he converted to Taoism and became a disciple of Master Chen Qiaoyun, who was the principal preacher at Sanyuan Palace by South Lake.

Before becoming a Taoist, Qian Laiyu had a humorous and playful disposition. He neglected his proper occupation and mostly associated with people who were not men of noble aspirations.

After converting to Taoism and listening to Master Chen’s teachings, he finally realized: “It is through friends that one cultivates benevolence; in daily words and deeds, nothing goes beyond loyalty and forgiveness. To forget one’s roots in pursuit of success—this is the reason why I have been gradually sinking into vulgarity.”

From then on, he strictly abided by his master’s instructions, and his moral character and Taoist attainments grew increasingly eminent.
