Qiu Taisheng was a native of Jiashan (now part of Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province) during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.

As recorded in Jingai Xindeng (The Lamp of the Heart at Golden Canopy): "Taisheng’s original given name was Shengji, and his literary name was Yinyang.

His family was wealthy; they founded Changchun Palace and donated a hundred mu of farmland (a traditional Chinese land measure, approximately 6.67 hectares per hundred mu) to accommodate wandering practitioners of the Quanzhen School of Taoism.

They invited Chaoyangzi to serve as the abbot of the palace. Every day, Taisheng carried water and fetched firewood, undertaking various ascetic tasks. The wandering Taoist practitioners, inspired by his devotion, became more diligent in their practice and encouraged one another.

At the age of 15, he received the Chuzhen Precepts (Initial Truth Precepts). From then on, he abstained from sensual pleasures, renounced personal addictions, and conducted himself with solemnity and prudence—setting a worthy example for others.

At the age of 17, he was conferred the Zhongji Precepts (Middle Ultimate Precepts) and the Tianxian Dajie (Great Precepts of Heavenly Immortals). He lived to the age of 79."
