The Rong Shouyu 荣守玉
Paul PengShare
Rong Shouyu (1230 – ?) was a native of Xiangzhou (now part of Henan Province) in the early Yuan Dynasty.
His family had been farmers for generations. From a young age, Rong Shouyu was quiet and virtuous, and was fond of listening to Taoist teachings.
As recorded in Account of Taoist Master Rong’s Faithful Study, in the 6th year of the Taizong reign period of the Yuan Dynasty (1234), Master Wei Zhongxu presided over Xiuzhen Guan (Xiuzhen Temple) in Zhangde and taught the doctrines of the Quanzhen School. At that time, Rong Shouyu was still a child (at the age of "tiaoling," referring to the period when a child’s hair was tied into a bun, usually around 7 to 10 years old), so he became a Taoist disciple and served Master Wei.

After joining the temple, he had a thorough understanding of Taoist scriptures and conducted himself with moral integrity. He was formally initiated as a Taoist priest and devoted himself to studying the ritual systems and talismans of the Zhengyi School.
In the 12th year of the Zhiyuan reign period (1275), he succeeded to the leadership of Xiuzhen Guan. He worked to promote Taoist teachings by gathering support and resources, and he stood out for his outstanding conduct—possessing qualities that even able-bodied men could hardly match.
Rong Shouyu had lofty aspirations and lived a pure and upright life, with profound mastery of Taoist doctrines and rituals. There was not a single day without people coming to invite him (for rituals), and those who came to consult him followed one after another.
Zhenren Dongming (Immortal Dongming), who was in charge of Taoist affairs, recommended him to the imperial court for this reason, and Rong Shouyu was further conferred the title of "Chongxuan Dashi" (Great Master of Venerating Mystery).
