The Sa Shoujian 萨守坚

The Sa Shoujian 萨守坚

Paul Peng
Sa Shoujian was a native of Xihe (present-day Fenyang County, Shanxi Province) during the Northern Song Dynasty; alternatively, some sources say he was from Nanhua (present-day Heze County, Shandong Province). He styled himself "Sa Ke of Fenyang" (Sa Ke: a respectful way to refer to oneself as a wanderer or scholar from Fenyang).

He studied under Zhang Shixiu, the 31st Heavenly Master of the Zhengyi School, who imparted to him esoteric Taoist essentials. Thereafter, his Taoist teachings and practices became widely renowned. Later, he traveled around as a wanderer and eventually passed away in Minzhong (a historical name for the region covering present-day Fujian Province).
