The Five Registers Talismans from the True Grotto Original Scripture of Supreme Clarity
As an early text of the Shangqing School (Supreme Clarity School), it likely originated during the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420–589 CE).
Originally, it was a part of The True Grotto Profound Scripture of the Supreme Elixir Hidden Text by the Taiyi Emperor Lord of Supreme Clarity; later, it was separated and circulated as an independent text.
The present version consists of one scroll and is included in the “Divine Talismans Category” (Shenfu Lei) of the Dongzhen Bu (True Grotto Section) of the Daozang (Taoist Canon). The text states: “The Five Deities of Taiyi (the Great Unity) present the Five Talismans and Five Registers, petitioning the Emperor Lord for the Dao of Integration, and seeking the secret to longevity and immortality.”
The so-called “Five Deities of Taiyi” refer to the deities within the human body that hold the Five Talismans and Five Registers, and govern human life and lifespan.
Taiyi petitions the Emperor Lord to bestow the talismans and registers for the salvation of humans; after the Emperor Lord integrates and finalizes the registration, that person can attain longevity and become an immortal.
This text contains twelve “Taiyi Inner Spirit Divine Talismans” (i.e., the Five Registers Talismans), which are claimed to be all formed from the supreme primordial essence qi (vital energy). It is said that wearing these talismans in accordance with the method allows one to seek longevity and achieve immortality.
