Shangqing Image-Containing Sword and Mirror Diagrams

The original title notes it was "Submitted by Sima Chengzhen of Baiyun, Tiantai".

It is a one-volume work and included in the "Spiritual Diagram Category" of the "Dongxuan Section" in the Taoist Canon (Daozang).

According to records, the "Image-Containing Mirror" and "Jingyun Sword" were both cast by Sima Chengzhen—a leading master of the Shangqing School during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty. Their shapes, structures, and inscribed decorations were modeled after the heavens, earth, yin, and yang.

The mirror could reflect human figures and objects, while the sword was used to subdue ghosts and defeat evil spirits. This text contains the diagrams and inscribed decorations of the Image-Containing Mirror and Jingyun Sword, each accompanied by a preface. The prefaces briefly explain the meanings behind the naming and symbolic design of the two objects, as well as their functions.

At the end of the text, additional contents are attached, including the imperial comment and poem by Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, Wu Ji’s Memorial on Submitting the Image-Containing Mirror Cast by Heavenly Master Sima from the second year of the Jingde era of the Northern Song Dynasty (1005), The Method of Casting the Sword and Mirror with Medicinal Formulas, and The Method of Refining Sand into Silver.

These additional sections were presumably compiled by later generations. It is known that Sima Chengzhen of the Tang Dynasty once presented the sword and mirror to Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty; later, during the Northern Song Dynasty, Wu Ji submitted these two objects to Emperor Zhenzong of the Song Dynasty via a memorial.

The entire text is believed to have been compiled during the Song Dynasty.
