The Shangqing Supreme Jade Clarity Hidden Script: Scripture of Subduing Demons, Divine Wisdom, and High Mystery
As an early classic of the Shangqing School (Higher Clarity School) of Taoism, it was roughly compiled during the Eastern Jin Dynasty.
Originally a part of The Dongzhen Jade Clarity Hidden Script Scripture, it was later separated to become an independent scroll and included in the "Zhengyi" (Orthodox Unity) section of the Daozang (Taoist Canon).
This scroll is divided into three chapters:
- The first chapter is The Great Cavern Hidden Script of Subduing Demons and Divine Wisdom from the Jade Clarity, also known as The Scripture of High Mystery. It contains one five-character poem and one parallel-prose piece. These works implicitly include the sacred names (taboos) of immortals, true beings, demons, and devils. It is said that before practitioners study and recite The Thirty-Nine Chapters of the Shangqing Great Cavern True Scripture, reciting this poem and prose once can summon immortals, subdue demons, and unlock the mysteries of the subtle (hidden) realms.
- The second chapter is The Inner Incantation Hidden Text of the Great Cavern for Dispelling Demons and Divine Wisdom. It records thirty-nine mnemonic formulas for visualizing divine beings. When practitioners recite The Thirty-Nine Chapters of the Shangqing Great Cavern True Scripture, they can follow these formulas to visualize deities and chant incantations, which is believed to resolve karmic knots, dispel grudges, summon immortals, and subdue demons.
- The third chapter is The Outer Chapter of Purple Texts and Hidden Text of Green Characters from the Nine Heavens and Jade Clarity. It contains a 120-character Taoist talismanic text (fuwen). When practitioners study and recite The Great Cavern True Scripture, they can write and wear this hidden text in accordance with the prescribed method, while visualizing (cunsi) and chanting invocations. This practice is said to enable communion with divine beings, attain true enlightenment, summon immortals, and subdue demons.
