The Shangqing Yuanshi Bianhua Baozhen Shangjing 上清元始变化宝真上经九灵太妙龟山玄箓

The Shangqing Primordial Transformation Precious Truth Upper Scripture: The Nine Spirits’ Supreme Marvel Turtle Mountain Mysterious Record (Shangqing Yuanshi Bianhua Baozhen Shangjing Jiuling Tai miao Guishan Xuanlu) is one of the early classics of the Shangqing School, presumably compiled during the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420–589 CE).

This text is already recorded in the Catalogue of the Shangqing Great Grottoes True Scripture (Shangqing Dadong Zhenjing Mu) and is also quoted in Wushang Miyao (The Supreme Secret Essentials).

The original text consists of three scrolls and is included in the Zhengyi (Orthodox Unity) Section of the Daozang (Taoist Canon).

Titled The Turtle Mountain Cinnabar Sovereign Flying Mystery Purple Script, it contains thirty-six characters of the "Flying Mystery Purple Script" (a type of seal script). According to the text, this script was transmitted by the Primordial Heavenly Lord to the Queen Mother of the West and hidden in a cave on Turtle Mountain; it implicitly contains the Cinnabar Sovereign’s (i.e., the Queen Mother of the West’s) title, attire, and true form. Practitioners who silently recite the incantations and inscribe the true script in accordance with the prescribed method can ascend to Turtle Mountain and become upper immortals.

Titled The Nine Spirits’ Supreme Marvel Turtle Mountain Mysterious Record, it includes one "Three Yuan Verse" (a five-character eulogistic poem), as well as true scripts and talismans such as the "Nine Heavens True Script" and "Turtle Mountain True Talismans." It is claimed that all these true scripts and talismans were inscribed on Turtle Mountain, implicitly containing the titles and numbers of celestial immortals, merit officials, talisman officers, and generals; "their meaning is profound and obscure, their rhythm graceful and wonderful." Practitioners who recite the verses and wear the talismans in accordance with the method can subdue demon kings and evil spirits and travel freely in the Shangqing (Supreme Clarity) realm.

Titled The Shangqing Primordial Birth Transformation Mysterious Record, it discusses the method of "preserving the spirit and transforming one’s form." The text states that all celestial sages and deities in heaven transform their forms and manifestations with the cycles of the four seasons, and their appearances and attire differ in spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Practitioners should understand the deities’ transformations, contemplate their forms in different seasons, observe fasting and take ablutions, recite incantations, and wear talismans. Long-term practice of this method will bring down true immortals; practitioners will be able to see the deities’ true forms, transform with the cosmic qi, and ascend to the great void.
