The Shen Changjing 沈常敬

The Shen Changjing 沈常敬

Paul Peng
Shen Changjing (1523-1653) was a native of Tongxiang, Zhejiang, during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. His courtesy name was Yizhai and his literary name was Taihezi.

As recorded in Jingai Xindeng (The Lamp of the Heart at Golden Canopy Mountain), his family had been engaged in Confucian scholarship for generations. Though the family was so poor that they had no grain left for the next day, Shen Changjing remained calm about it. At the age of forty, he entered Jingai Mountain, resided in Quyun Guan (Quyun Temple), and practiced Taoist doctrines.
Later, he traveled to famous mountains and met Pingyangzi on his way, then took Pingyangzi as his teacher. Only then did he obtain the core tenets of Taoism (taught by Tai Shang Lao Jun), and eventually settled in Maoshan Mountain. He passed away in the 10th year of the Shunzhi reign (1653).
