Paul PengShare
Shen Yuandao was a native of Tailin (now Taizhou, Jiangsu Province) in the early Southern Song Dynasty.
According to Suzhou Fu Zhi (Gazetteer of Suzhou Prefecture): He studied under Xu Shenweng (Xu the Divine Elder) and became a Taoist priest. After mastering Taoist cultivation techniques, he moved to Yushan Mountain and built Zhulin An (Bamboo Grove Hermitage) for his own residence.

During the Shaoxing era of Emperor Gaozong (1131–1162 AD), his residence was bestowed the name Zhaozhen An (Zhaozhen Hermitage). He traveled around the Jiangnan region (the area south of the Yangtze River); later, he built Qianzhen Guan (Qianzhen Taoist Temple) in Fushan and Yizhen Guan (Yizhen Taoist Temple) in Meili, where he engaged in the refining of outer alchemy.
