Shi Chuhou (1101–1174) was a native of Liquan in Qianzhou (now part of Shaanxi Province) during the Jin Dynasty. His original name was Shi Gongmi, and he went by the literary name Dongyangzi.

From his childhood, he admired the Taoist tradition. In the second year of the Dading era (1162), he traveled to Mount Zhongnan and studied under Wang Chongyang, the founder of the Quanzhen School of Taoism, focusing on the Quanzhen teachings of "cultivating nature and refining life essence". Wang Chongyang bestowed upon him his literary name and Taoist title.
After Wang Chongyang passed away, Shi Chuhou further studied under Ma Danyang (one of Wang’s top disciples), who instructed him in the techniques of Taoist inner alchemy. From then on, Shi Chuhou diligently practiced Taoist cultivation. Later, he returned to his hometown to live in seclusion, unconstrained by secular conventions, and was affectionately known as "Shi the Eccentric" by the locals.

He passed away in the fourteenth year of the Dading era (1174) at the age of seventy-four.
