Shi Tai (1022-1158), styled Dezhi, was also known by the literary names "Xinglin" and "Cuixuanzi". He was a native of Changzhou during the late Northern Song Dynasty and early Southern Song Dynasty.
He studied the "Great Dao of Golden Elixir" under Zhang Boduan and wrote Huanyuan Pian (Treatise on Returning to the Origin), which was widely circulated. He passed away in the 28th year of the Shaoxing era of Emperor Gaozong of the Song Dynasty (1158) at the age of 137.

He transmitted the Dao to Xue Daoguang, and the Quanzhen School (Complete Perfection School) reveres him as one of the "Southern Five Patriarchs". (From Jingai Xindeng (Heart Lamp of the Golden Canopy) and Lishi Zhenxian Tidao Tongjian (Comprehensive Mirror of Authentic Immortals Through the Ages), Volume 49)
