The Shi Zhidao 史志道
Paul PengShare
Shi Zhidao (1206-1292) was a native of Pingyang (now part of Shanxi Province) during the late Jin and early Yuan dynasties.
His courtesy name was Fugu, and his Taoist title was Chunranzi.
He lost his father at an early age but had a gentle and pure nature, with his sole aspiration lying in the Taoist tradition.

In the first year of the Zhengda era (1224), he admired the spiritual attainments of True Person Lingyin of the Chongzhen School, so he became his disciple. The True Person bestowed upon him his current given name (Zhidao) and imparted to him the complete Taoist doctrines and practices.
Shi Zhidao dedicated himself to his studies with great diligence and perseverance. After the True Person passed away (attained immortality), Shi Zhidao built a thatched hut near his mentor’s tomb and observed the full mourning period according to ritual.
During that time, wars between the Jin and Yuan dynasties raged, and Shi Zhidao did not step out of the mountain for several years.
He had a close friendship with Yao Jiao, who held the Taoist title Anranzi. After the country finally achieved peace, he renovated Taoist temples. The Grand Master of the Taoist school granted the temple the plaque "Xianren Wanshou Gong" (Palace of Longevity for Immortals). From then on, the number of his disciples gathered to over a thousand.
Shi Zhidao treated others with benevolence and forgiveness, and people both inside and outside the Taoist community regarded him as a virtuous man who embodied Taoist principles and cherished moral integrity.
In the 29th year of the Zhiyuan era (1292), he passed away without illness at the age of 86.
Prince Shou posthumously awarded him the title "Chunran Tidao Mingde Zhenren" (True Person of Pure Nature, Embodiment of the Dao, and Bright Virtue). He had initiated hundreds of disciples into Taoism, among whom the notable ones included Yang Daoyuan, Liu Zhiwei, and Li Zhichun.
