Sun Bu'er (1119–1182) was a native of Ninghai (now Muping District, Shandong Province) during the Jin Dynasty. Her given name was Fuchun, her Taoist monastic name was Bu'er, and she went by the literary name Qingjing Sanren (the Unrestrained One of Purity and Tranquility).
She was commonly known as Immortal Sun among the people, and was the wife of Ma Danyang, the founder of the Yuxian (Meeting Immortals) School of the Quanzhen Sect. In the 7th year of the Dading era of the Jin Dynasty (1167), when Wang Chongyang founded the Quanzhen Taoist School in Shandong, he once resided in her home—Sun Bu'er was deeply influenced by Wang Chongyang's ideas.

In the 9th year of the Dading era (1169), after Ma Danyang became a Taoist hermit, Sun Bu'er resolved to leave her three sons behind. She went to the Golden Lotus Hall, where she became a Taoist and joined the Quanzhen Sect under Wang Chongyang (the leader of the Quanzhen Sect). Wang Chongyang taught her the secret techniques of the "Heavenly Talismans and Cloud Seals" (a core ritual system in Taoism).

In the 15th year of the Dading era (1175), she resided in the Immortal Feng Cave in Luoyang to practice Taoism, and became the founder of the Qingjing (Purity and Tranquility) School of the Quanzhen Sect.

In the 6th year of the Zhiyuan era of the Yuan Dynasty (1269), she was posthumously awarded the title "Zhenren of Purity, Profundity, Sincerity, and Virtue" (Qingjing Yuanzhen Shunde Zhenren). During the Zhida era (1308–1311) of the Yuan Dynasty, she was further honored with the title "Yuanjun of Purity, Profundity, Integrity, Mystery, Humility, and Transformation" (Qingjing Yuanzhen Xuanxu Shunhua Yuanjun).

She authored three volumes of Secret Texts on the Elixir Path Narrated by Yuanjun Sun Bu'er and one volume of Discourses of Yuanjun Sun Bu'er, and is regarded as the originator of the inner alchemy tradition for female Taoists (Kundao) in later generations.
