Sun Wentao

Sun Wentao, also known simply as Sun Tao, had the courtesy name Wenzang. He was a native of Shanyin County in Kuaiji Commandery during the Southern Dynasties (now Shanyin County, Zhejiang Province, China).
He entered Mount Mao (a sacred Taoist mountain) and studied under Tao Hongjing (honored as "Hermit of Mao" for his seclusion there), receiving instruction in authentic Taoist doctrines and practices. When he later saw the handwritten copies of the Shangqing (Supreme Clarity) scriptures by the three Perfected Ones—Yang Xi and Xu Mi (and his son Xu Hui)—he copied them with extraordinary skill, achieving a masterful likeness.
Later, he studied the calligraphy style of Wang Xizhi (honored as "the Great Calligrapher" in Chinese history) and attained a profound grasp of it. According to Records of Mount Mao, Sun Wentao "had a gentle temperament yet a resolute demeanor; his actions were principled, while his wisdom was flexible. Since his undertakings were never ordinary, he stood out as a man of exceptional talent and ingenuity."
The stone inscriptions of The Nine Bestowals Texts at Southern Grotto and The Altar of the Former Residence of Elder Xu were all his handwritten works.
