It is a supplementary work to his book Nanhua Zhenjing Xinzhuan (New Commentary on The True Scripture of Southern Florescence).
Consisting of one volume, it is included in the Yujue (Jade Commentary) category of the Dongshen Section of the Daozang (Daoist Canon).
The book is divided into two parts: Shiyi (Supplements) and Zatan (Miscellaneous Talks).
The Supplementary Notes on Zhuangzi
Shiyi discusses five key tenets from the Zhuangzi, namely "the sacrificial ox in the grand temple", "governing the world through Spring and Autumn Annals", "the shadow’s attendant questioning the shadow", "dreaming of being a butterfly", and "zhiyan (goblet words)". Starting from a single tenet to explore Zhuangzi’s fundamental theories, it is essentially five treatises. Zashuo contains twenty-nine entries, with the meanings of nature and destiny as its core theme. It discusses rhetorical examples such as form and name, and spontaneity from the Zhuangzi, and is a collection of the author’s reading notes on the Zhuangzi.
