The Wonderful Scripture of the Ten Teachers Saving Beings in the Cavern Mysterious and Numinous Treasure Scripture
The author is unknown. It was probably compiled around the Sui and Tang dynasties.
It is one scroll and is included in the "Original Text Category" of the Cavern Mysterious Section in the Taoist Canon.
The scripture falsely claims to be a discourse delivered by the Heavenly Venerable to King Kuyeli on the way of the Ten Teachers, demonstrating various divine powers and merits.
The so-called "Ten Teachers" actually refer to the Ten Precepts:
- Abstain from killing living beings, and one can attain a long-lived and indestructible body.
- Abstain from stealing, and one can obtain natural treasures and wealth.
- Abstain from anger and resentment, and one can gain firm power.
- Abstain from adultery and lechery, and one can keep the body and mind pure at all times.
- Abstain from double-tongued speech (i.e., do not tell lies or falsehoods), and one’s words will become like laws that all gods and humans are happy to hear.
- Abstain from jealousy, and one can be free from attachment to delusions and dispel all darkness.
- Abstain from drinking alcohol, and one’s mind will be as bright as the sun and moon, shining on dark places and clarifying all things.
- Abstain from miserliness and greed, and one can partake of celestial banquets with all flavors provided naturally.
- Abstain from slander and arrogance, and one can attain a pure and wonderful body.
- Diligently cultivate the Dao, uphold the Dao and practice virtue, and one can help seven generations of ancestors ascend to heaven.
