The Taishang Dongxuan Lingbao Miaojing Zhongpian Xuzhang 太上洞玄灵宝妙经众篇序章

Paul Peng
Taishang Dongxuan Lingbao Miaojing Zhongpian Xuzhang, also known as Zhongpian Xu Jing or Zhongpian Jing.

It is one of the ancient Taoist Lingbao Scriptures, probably compiled during the Southern and Northern Dynasties.

The Lingbao Zhongmeng Jingmu (Catalog of the Lingbao Central Alliance Scriptures) records "one scroll of the Preface to All Scriptures", which refers to this text. It was not included in the Zhengtong Daozang (Orthodox Taoist Canon).

Three fragmentary Dunhuang manuscripts of this text survive today, namely S6659, P2386, and manuscript No. 253 collected by the Kyoto Museum.

Among them, the Kyoto manuscript was copied in the third year of Chengsheng in the Liang Dynasty (554). The content of this scripture is an excerpt from three ancient Lingbao Scriptures, recompiled into a single scroll.

The three included scriptures are as follows:

  1. Yuanshi Wulao Chishu Yupian Zhenwen Tianshu Jing (Scripture of the Heavenly Writing, the Red Book and Jade Chapters of the Five Ancient Celestial Worthies of the Primordial Beginning);
  2. Sanyuan Pinjie Jing Daojun Wennan Zuifu (Scripture of the Three Primes' Precepts and Grades: the Lord of the Way Inquires about Sin and Blessing);
  3. Lingbao Zhutian Neiyin Ziran Yuzi Xia (Lingbao Scripture of the Inner Sounds of the Heavens and the Natural Jade Characters, Lower Scroll).

All three of these scriptures have separate editions in the Daozang.
