Taishang Runxuan Lingbao Kongdong Lingzhang (The Void Spiritual Chapters of the Numinous Treasure of the Moist Mysterious of the Supreme Oneness)
One of the ancient Taoist Lingbao Scriptures, compiled approximately between the late Eastern Jin Dynasty and the early Southern Dynasties.
It was already recorded in Lu Xiujing’s Catalogue of Lingbao Scriptures.
The original text consisted of one scroll and has been lost.
Currently, three fragmentary manuscripts copied during the Tang Dynasty have been discovered in Dunhuang (catalogue numbers: P2399, DX1870+1622+240, S2915).
In addition, this scripture is frequently cited in other Taoist texts such as Wushang Miyao (The Supreme Secret Essentials) and Sandong Zhunang (Pearl Satchel of the Three Grottoes).
The scripture states that the Primordial Heavenly Lord (Yuanshi Tianzun), the Supreme Great Dao Lord (Taishang Dadaojun), and the Thirty-Two Heavenly Emperors, along with other deities, assembled at Mount Yucha in the Jade Kingdom of Xiban. The Heavenly Lord commanded each of the Thirty-Two Heavenly Emperors to recite one "Void Spiritual Chapter" (Kongdong Lingzhang).
These thirty-two "Void Spiritual Chapters" are all five-character eulogistic poems. It is claimed that those who hear these celestial spiritual chapters will bring blessings to ten thousand generations of ancestors, enable the souls of the deceased to ascend to heaven, be reborn as immortals in every lifetime, and ensure their families remain pure and noble.
Pious men and women who can observe prolonged fasting and chant the spiritual chapters ten thousand times will attain the Dao: fire and water will emanate from their bodies, and they will immediately gain the ability to fly.
This text represents an early Taoist practice of chanting chapters and contemplating deities.
