Tang Youcheng (1060-1113)
Tang Youcheng, courtesy name Daoyuan, was a native of Tongchuan at the end of the Northern Song Dynasty.
In the 9th year of the Xining reign (1076), he took the scripture examination together with his younger brother Tang Youzhi, and both became Daoist priests.
Tang Youcheng studied under Daoist master Xu Shenweng in Taizhou. Later, he went to Maoshan Mountain, where he visited Mr. Liu to receive the scriptures and doctrines of the Shangqing Sect (a major school of Daoism). After that, he lived with his brother Youzhi at the Crane Temple on Maoshan Mountain.
During the Xuanhe reign (1119-1125), Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty issued an imperial edict to search for extraordinary talents across the country. Tang Youcheng and his brother chose to retreat to the remote mountains, where they lived in seclusion for more than fifty years and never came out.
Tang Youcheng passed away in the 13th year of the Shaoxing reign at the age of 84.
