Tang Zhidao was a native of Danyang in Zhenjiang during the Southern Song Dynasty.
He devoted himself to studying Taoism and resided on Mount Damao for thirty years. He studied under Bao Zhizhen, through whom he obtained the essential teachings of the Supreme Clarity Great Dao (Shangqing Great Dao, the core doctrine of the Shangqing Sect of Taoism).
In the third year of the Chunyou era (1243), Bao Zhizhen passed on to him the "Seal and Sword"—the symbolic artifacts representing the transmission of leadership in the Shangqing Sect. In the fifth year of the Chunyou era (1245), Tang Zhidao was summoned to reside at Taiyi Palace (a major Taoist temple), but he firmly declined the appointment and returned to Mount Damao.

In April of the eleventh year of the Chunyou era (1251), he submitted a memorial to the emperor requesting to resign from his religious duties. In the first month of the sixth year of the Baoyou era (1258), he passed away. He was posthumously titled "Mr. Lingbao" (meaning "the gentleman of Numinous Treasure," a title reflecting his Taoist attainments).

Tang Zhidao was the 37th Grand Master of the Shangqing Sect of Mount Maoshan.
