Tao Honghua (1621-1692)

Tao Honghua was a native of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, in the early Qing Dynasty. His courtesy name was Feihuan, and he came from a family of successive officials in Suzhou.

He was born during the Tianqi reign period. At the age of ten, when the Ming Dynasty fell, he abandoned his studies for the imperial civil service examinations and lived in seclusion at the Hall of the Three Officials in Yuanmiao Temple, where he extensively mastered Taoist books.

In the fourth year of the Shunzhi reign (1647), a severe famine struck the Wu region, and plagues broke out. The people unanimously recommended Honghua to preside over the grand ritual of prayer and exorcism. The provincial military governor, considering his meritorious service, intended to recommend him for an official position, but Honghua firmly declined and resolved to become a Taoist Priest.

The governor fulfilled his aspiration by appointing him to the Daoji Si (Taoist Administrative Office) and made him the abbot of the Hall of Mount Tai. In his later years, he became indifferent to worldly affairs and treated people with medicine without seeking any reward. He passed away in the 31st year of the Kangxi reign (1692) at the age of 72 (as recorded in Records of Yuanmiao Temple).
