Tao Jing'an (1618–1673) lived during the transition from the late Ming Dynasty to the early Qing Dynasty.

His ancestors originally resided in Kuaiji (a historical region in present-day Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province). His grandfather held an official post in Sichuan, so the family later registered their household in Sichuan. His original name was Shen Hao; he also used the names Tao Ran and Tao Shouzhen.

He styled himself Jing'anzi, and his disciples addressed him as "Mr. Jing'an".

As recorded in Jingai Xindeng (The Lamp in the Golden Hut): When he was five years old, his father passed away. Soon after, his mother also died of illness, and he relied on his elder sister to survive. When he grew up, his elder sister disliked his refusal to engage in work to support himself, so she refused to arrange a marriage for him.

After his elder sister’s death, he took up residence on Jinge Mountain (Golden Canopy Mountain). Later, he traveled and wandered across the country, and maintained close and friendly relations with Hong Dongming, Huang Chiyang, and Sheng Qingya. Tao Jing'an had an extensive knowledge of the classics of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism (the "Three Teachings"), and there was no relevant text he had not read or studied.

In the 15th year of the Shunzhi reign (1658), he went to Baiyun Guan (White Cloud Temple) in the capital (Beijing) and received Taoist precepts from Wang Changyue. Wang Changyue renamed him "Shouzhen" (upholding integrity). After that, Tao Jing'an returned to Jinge Mountain to propagate Taoist doctrines and practices.

He passed away in the 12th year of the Kangxi reign (1673) at the age of 56.
