Tao Tangzuo was a native of Dongguan (present-day Dongguan City, Guangdong Province) in the late Yuan Dynasty. He went by the Taoist title "Dongyangzi" (Master of Eastern Yang).

He studied under Chen Zhixu, who imparted to him the Taoist doctrine of "Jiuhuan" (the Path of Nine Returns—a core concept in Taoist inner alchemy referring to the cyclical refinement and transformation of vital energy to attain spiritual perfection).
