Tao Yanming (1142-1227) was a native of Xiangling County in Pingyang Prefecture during the Jin Dynasty, which is now Xiangfen County, Shanxi Province.

His courtesy name was Mingfu, and his Taoist title was "Wumingzi" (Master of No Name).
As recorded in the middle volume of Inner Biographies of Immortals from the Ancestral Court of Zhongnan Mountain (Zhongnanshan Zuting Xianzhen Neizhuan): He was known among neighbors for his filial piety toward his parents. At the age of 30, he lost both his father and mother, so he abandoned his family home and settled in Lingbao.

In the 13th year of the Dading era (1173), he went to Liujiang Village, became a disciple of Ma Danyang (one of the core disciples of Quanzhen Taoism’s founder Wang Chongyang), and was initiated as a Taoist monk. Later, he chose a place to reside in Weinan.

Within a few years, Ma Danyang summoned him to live at the Quanzhen ancestral court and bestowed upon him the Taoist title "Wumingzi". In the 22nd year of the Dading era (1182), when Ma Danyang returned east, Tao Yanming lived in seclusion on Taohua Mountain (Peach Blossom Mountain) for over 20 years. After that, he moved to Lingguang Cave on Nü’er Mountain (Daughter Mountain) and resided there for more than a decade, before relocating to Changyuan.

In the 3rd year of the Zhengda era (1226), he lived at Yunxi Hermitage. In the third month of the 4th year of the Zhengda era (1227), he passed away from an illness at the age of 85.
