 The Tenfold Preceptual Ledger FULL NAME IS

Records of Merits and Transgressions Based on the Ten Precepts

Attributed to the Celestial Master Lü Chunyang, the Pure Yang Immortal of the Youyou Supreme Deity, as the revealed and established guidelines. It contains a Preface falsely ascribed to Lü Chunyang and an inscription by Liu Shouyuan.
Liu Shouyuan, the author of A Brief Exposition of the Perfect Heavenly Immortal Precepts of the Three Altars, which was included in the Zhang Collection of Essentials of the Taoist Canon, was seemingly a scholar active in the early years of the Qing Dynasty.

The Ten Precepts refer to: first, the precept against killing; second, the precept against theft; third, the precept against lechery; fourth, the precept against abusive speech; fifth, the precept against divisive speech; sixth, the precept against frivolous speech; seventh, the precept against false speech; eighth, the precept against greed; ninth, the precept against anger; tenth, the precept against ignorance.

Under each precept, a certain number of transgressions and a certain number of meritorious deeds are specified respectively, exhorting people to reflect on and admonish themselves by contrasting their own conduct against this record of merits and transgressions. This work ranked among the most influential moralistic exhortatory texts circulating in the Qing Dynasty.

It was included in the Zhang Collection of Essentials of The Daozang, as well as categorized under the section of Precepts and Moralistic Texts in the Extra-Taoist Canon Scriptures, a classic work that embodies the self-cultivation creed of upholding virtues and forsaking evils in The Dao.
