The Tian Shiwen 田仕文

Tian Shiwen (569–643)

Tian Shiwen was a native of Huyi (present-day northern Huxian County, Shaanxi Province) during the Sui and Tang dynasties.
In the 7th year of the Kaihuang era (587 CE), at the age of 19, he was ordained as a Taoist priest. He studied under Master Wei Jie, styled Huayangzi, from whom he received and learned the Sandong Scripture and Doctrines (esoteric Taoist scriptures of the Three Caverns), Taoist talismans, and alchemical formulas.

He practiced "fuqi" (breathing exercises to absorb vital energy) and "bigu" (abstaining from grain—a Taoist discipline). Whenever he entered his chamber to refine his spiritual and physical energy, he would often stay inside for ten days to a month at a time, secluding himself and not going out.

He was proficient in Taoist arts and often used talismans and incantations to help others; his practices repeatedly manifested miraculous responses. Countless people from all directions held him in high reverence and faith.

Tian Shiwen passed away in the mountains in the 17th year of the Zhenguan era (643 CE) at the age of 75. His well-known disciple was Yin Wencao.
