Tian Shouzhong was a native of Jiyuan (now part of Henan Province) during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644).

As recorded in Gazetteer of Huaiqing Prefecture (Huaiqing Fu Zhi): During the Wanli reign period of the Ming Dynasty (1573–1620), he became a Taoist Priest at Jinlu Mountain. He practiced the Taoist technique of "sacrificing the self for cultivation" (a rigorous ascetic practice emphasizing tempering one’s will and body through self-denial or endurance to achieve spiritual refinement) and was renowned throughout the local prefectures and townships for his profound Taoist doctrines and practices.
