The Tian Xuying 田虚应
Paul PengShare
Tian Xuying, styled Liangyi, was a native of the Qi State region during the Tang Dynasty (now part of Shandong Province).
He was unadorned and straightforward, never holding back his words.

He was extremely filial to his mother. After his mother passed away, he traveled across famous mountains and great rivers, giving free rein to his will in the rivers and lakes (a metaphor for a wandering, unconstrained life).
During the Longshuo era of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty (661–663), Tian Hou, the provincial governor, had the Jiangzhen Hall built on Mount Heng to accommodate him.
He studied under Xue Jichang, a prominent disciple of Sima Chengzhen, and was fully taught the esoteric methods of the Supreme Pure Grotto Heaven (Shangqing Dadong).
During the Yuanhe era of Emperor Xianzong of the Tang Dynasty, he retreated to live in seclusion on Mount Tiantai and never came out again. The Taoist methods of the "Three Grottoes" (a core category of Taoist scriptures and practices) in the Jiangzhe region (covering present-day Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces) regarded Xuying as their founding master.
Among his disciples were Feng Weiliang, Chen Guayan, Xu Lingfu, and others.
