The Scripture of the Three Meritorious Aspirations Preached by the Heavenly Venerable

Author: Unknown

Date of Composition: Likely the Sui or Tang Dynasty
Textual Inclusion: Not collected in the Zhengtong Daoist Canon

Only one Dunhuang fragmentary manuscript (S6002) exists, preserving merely 18 lines of the scripture.

The text is framed as the Heavenly Venerable expounding the "Ten Meritorious Aspirations"—ten wishes that practitioners of the Dao should make from the bottom of their hearts. It is claimed that those who recite and practice this scripture will attain natural peace and happiness, and be able to dwell in the Pure Land. Judging from the surviving text, parts of it are identical to the first scroll of The Scripture of the Supreme Mystery, True Oneness, and the Fundamental Origin (manuscript P3711).

It is suspected that this scripture was compiled and adapted by Tang-dynasty Taoist priests by excerpting content from The Scripture of the Fundamental Origin.
