The Tiantai School is a branch of the Shangqing School. During the Tang Dynasty, the Shangqing School took Maoshan as its main mountain. When it came to Sima Chengzhen, he founded the Tiantai Mountain Taoist School and the Hengshan Taoist School.
Sima Chengzhen resided in Tiantai Mountain and had associations with Chen Ziang, Li Bai, Meng Haoran, Song Zhiwen, Wang Wei, He Zhizhang, etc. He had profound Taoist attainments and passed on his teachings to Xue Jichang, who in turn passed them on to Tian Xuying. Tian Xuying then passed them on to Feng Weiliang, Xu Lingfu, Chen Guayan, and others. Both the Tiantai School and the Hengshan School were Taoist schools that transmitted the Shangqing scriptures and registers during the Tang Dynasty.
