The Tong Qinghe 童清和

Tong Qinghe (1619–1716) was a native of Longyou, Zhejiang Province, who lived during the transition from the late Ming Dynasty to the early Qing Dynasty. He styled himself Rongyangzi.

As recorded in Jingai Xindeng (The Lamp in the Golden Hut): In his youth, Tong Qinghe was fond of the study of spiritual cultivation and believed in Buddhism. He maintained close relationships with dozens of Buddhist monks. In the 14th year of the Shunzhi reign (1657), he went to Tiantai Mountain and resided there for nine years, during which he successfully cultivated the "Great Elixir" (a core concept in Taoist alchemy, representing the achievement of a refined spiritual or physical state).

Later, he met Zhao Fuyang, who advised him to become a disciple of Zhou Tailang.

In the 5th year of the Kangxi reign (1666), Tong Qinghe went to Jinge Mountain (Golden Canopy Mountain). In the 7th year of the Kangxi reign (1668), he set out on a journey to travel. In the 8th year of the Kangxi reign (1669), he returned and settled in Maoshan Mountain.

In the 12th year of the Kangxi reign (1673), the patriarch Tao Jing’an summoned Tong Qinghe to go to Jingu Cave in Hangzhou, where Tong became a disciple of Zhou Tailang. Zhou Tailang performed the capping ceremony (a ritual symbolizing the formal acceptance of a disciple) for him and conferred Taoist precepts on him. More than ten years later, Tong Qinghe returned to Tiantai Mountain and served as the principal lecturer at Tongbai Palace.

In July of the 55th year of the Kangxi reign (1716), he passed away without illness at the age of 96.

Tong Qinghe was the 10th-generation precept-master of the Longmen Sect (Dragon Gate Sect) of Taoism.
