Definition
The Tongbai Palace Sect (桐柏宫派) is a branch of the Quanzhen Longmen School (龙门派) centered on Tongbai Palace (桐柏宫), also known as Chongdao Temple (崇道观), on Tiantai Mountain in Zhejiang Province. Tiantai Mountain is one of the most sacred sites in Chinese religious history — the home of the Tang dynasty Shangqing master Sima Chengzhen and the founding site of the Tiantai School of Buddhism. The Tongbai Palace Sect’s establishment on this mountain placed it within a landscape of accumulated sanctity that predated the Quanzhen tradition by centuries.
Gao Qingyu: Founding Patriarch
Gao Qingyu (高清宇), courtesy name Dongli (東離), was from Ninghai Prefecture in Shandong and resided in Changbai. He was a Confucian scholar well-versed in classical learning. In 1692 (the 31st year of the Kangxi reign), at the remarkable age of 75, he traveled from Taiwan to Jingu Dong (金鼓洞) in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, where he studied under Zhou Tailang (周太朗, Taoist title Mingyang 明阳), the founder of the Jingu Dong Sect and a 9th-generation Longmen master. Through this transmission, Gao Qingyu became a 10th-generation Longmen disciple.
Zhou Tailang taught him a curriculum that integrated the Three Teachings:
- Taoist texts: Nan Hua Jing (Zhuangzi), Dao De Jing, Can Tong Qi (《参同契》), Wu Zhen Pian (《悟真篇》)
- Buddhist texts: Avatamsaka Sutra (《华严经》), Heart Sutra (《心经》)
- Confucian texts: Zhao’s annotations on the Great Learning (《大学》) and Doctrine of the Mean (《中庸》)
Gao Qingyu lived at Helin Taoist Abbey (费林道院) at Jingu Dong for over 40 years, with numerous followers. In 1735 (the 13th year of the Yongzheng reign), he went to preside over the lecture seat at Chongdao Temple on Tongbai Mountain, founding the Tongbai Palace Sect as a distinct Longmen branch. He passed away in 1768 (the 33rd year of the Qianlong reign). He also wrote A Study on Taiwan’s Customs (《台湾风俗考》) in three volumes — a rare secular scholarly work from a Quanzhen master.
The Three Principal Disciples and Their Sub-Lineages
| Disciple (11th gen.) | Taoist Title | Sub-Lineages Founded |
|---|---|---|
| Shen Yibing (沈一炳) | Qingyun (清云) | Sanyuan Palace branch (Chen Yangfu); Banchi An branch (Zhou Yangben); Kaihua Yuan branch (Fei Yangde) |
| Fang Yiding (方一定) | Rongyang (荣阳) | Doumu Palace branch at Peijiaqiao, Suzhou (via Gu Yangkun → Wang Laizhen) |
| Min Yide (闵一得) | Lanyun (懒云) | Jueyun sub-sect (via Wang Laiyin and others) |
Shen Yibing’s Branch
Shen Yibing (沈一炳, Taoist title Qingyun 清云) was the most institutionally prolific of the three. His 12th-generation disciples founded three distinct sub-sects: Chen Yangfu (陈阳甫) established the Sanyuan Palace branch (三元宫派) at Nanhu in Yuhang; Zhou Yangben (周阳本) founded the Banchi An branch (半池幵派) at Tongshan in Yuhang; and Fei Yangde (费阳德) established the Kaihua Yuan branch (开化院派) at Shecun in Guian (Wuxian County).
Min Yide: The Scholar-Patriarch
Min Yide (闵一得, 1748–1836, Taoist title Lanyun 懒云) was the most intellectually distinguished of Gao Qingyu’s disciples. Well-versed in the Three Teachings — Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism — he was described as “a rare and renowned Taoist scholar in the Qing dynasty.” His great-disciples, including Wang Laiyin (王来建), revered him as their ancestor and founded the Jueyun sub-sect (觉云派). Min Yide’s numerous works on Taoist cultivation, inner alchemy, and the Three Teachings synthesis make him one of the most significant Taoist literary figures of the Qing period.

The Qing dynasty Taoist temple — the Tongbai Palace Sect’s three principal disciples each founded major sub-lineages, making it one of the most institutionally generative Longmen branches in the Jiangnan region.
Zhengyi Perspective
In the Zhengyi tradition, Tiantai Mountain’s sacred significance encompasses both the Shangqing tradition — through Sima Chengzhen’s Tang dynasty Tiantai School — and the Quanzhen Longmen presence that the Tongbai Palace Sect represents. The mountain’s accumulated sanctity, layered across centuries of Taoist and Buddhist practice, provided the Tongbai Palace Sect with a sacred geography that amplified the authority of its transmission.
Gao Qingyu’s Three Teachings curriculum — integrating Taoist inner alchemy, Buddhist sutras, and Confucian ethics — reflects the same synthetic impulse that characterizes the Zhengyi tradition’s own engagement with the broader Chinese religious inheritance. The Zhengyi priest who performs the jiao ceremony draws on a ritual heritage that has absorbed elements of Buddhist liturgy and Confucian ethics across the centuries. Gao Qingyu’s explicit curriculum of Three Teachings integration is the Quanzhen monastic expression of the same underlying conviction: that the Tao’s truth is not the exclusive property of any single tradition but is refracted through all of them.
