Wang Can was a figure who lived during the reign of Emperor Yizong of the Tang Dynasty.

He originally served as the magistrate of Wangwu County. As recorded in Volume 35 of Comprehensive Mirror of Authentic Immortals Who Embodied the Dao Through the Ages: He once read The Yellow Court Scripture (Huangting Jing) but failed to comprehend its profound meanings.

Later, he resigned from his official post and settled at the foot of Mount Wangwu. He practiced "juegu erqi" (a Taoist ascetic practice of abstaining from grain and nourishing the body with "qi"—vital energy) and devoted himself to studying the esoteric teachings of The Yellow Court Scripture.

The True Immortal of the Eastern Pole, moved by his diligence, imparted to him Annotations on The Yellow Court Scripture and a piece of peach pit. Wang Can took the peach pit (as a ritual or alchemical preparation) and recited the scripture, eventually mastering the arts of immortality.
