Wang Cheng was a native of Donghai (present-day Yanzhou, Shandong Province) during the Han Dynasty.
His courtesy name was Xuanfu, and his Taoist title was Donghuazi.

Volume 20 of Lishi Zhenxian Tidao Tongjian (Comprehensive Mirror of the True Immortals Throughout History Who Embodied the Dao) records that in his youth, he secluded himself for cultivation in the Yanxia Cave of Mount Kunlun, building a hut with grass and naming it Donghua View. Later, he imparted such techniques as the Red Talisman and Jade Seal Script, the Golden Codes and Spiritual Texts, the Green Dragon Swordsmanship, as well as the alchemical formulas and the control of fire phases to his disciple Zhongli Quan. During the Yuan Dynasty, he was conferred the title "Emperor of Shaoyang in the Purple Mansion of Donghua" by imperial decree.
