Wang Daoyuan was a native of Xiujiang, Nanchang, during the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties.

A Quanzhen Taoist priest, he styled himself "Hunranzi" (Master of the Primordial Unity). He adhered to the tenets of the Northern Branch of Quanzhen Taoism, which emphasizes "cultivating nature first, then life" and "simultaneous cultivation of nature and life."
His works include Huanzhen Ji (Collection of Returning to Truth), Daoxuan Pian (Treatise on the Mystery of Tao), as well as collated versions of Santian Yisui (Marrow of the Three Heavens' Changes), annotations on Taishang Shengxuan Shuo Xiaozai Huming Miaojing (The Supreme Venerable's Discourse on Ascending to Mystery: A Wonderful Scripture for Eliminating Disasters and Protecting Life), Taishang Laojun Shuo Chang Qingjing Miaojing Zuan Tu Jiezhu (Illustrated Annotations on the Supreme Lord Laozi's Discourse on the Constant Purity and Tranquility Wonderful Scripture), Cuigong Ruyao Jing Zhu jie (Annotations on Master Cui's Mirror of Entering the Elixir), Huangdi Yinfu Jing Jia Song Jiezhu (Interpretive Annotations with Odes on the Yellow Emperor's Hidden Talisman Scripture), and Qingtian Ge Zhu jie (Annotations on the Song of the Clear Sky), all of which have been handed down to posterity.

He also engraved and published books such as Qing'an Yingchanzi Yulu (Recorded Sayings of Qing'an Yingchanzi) in six volumes.
