Wang Guolu, also known as Wang Yuanyuan.

A native of Macheng, Hubei Province during the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty.

He joined the Xunfang Battalion (garrison battalion) in Suzhou in the northwest as a soldier in his youth. After retiring, he went to Jiuquan to become a Taoist priest and soon resided at the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang.

In the 25th year of the Guangxu reign (1899), while renovating the cave walls, he discovered scriptures and cultural relics hidden in the partition walls of the grottoes, which he later sold to the Hungarian Aurel Stein.

Shortly afterward, he sold more relics to the French sinologist Paul Pelliot, the Japanese Otani Kozui, the American Langdon Warner, and others, resulting in a large number of precious cultural relics and historical sites being scattered abroad.

Subsequently, he dug passages between the grottoes, causing severe damage to the murals inside the caves.

The scattered scriptures and cultural relics are now collected in museums in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, and Japan, with existing collection catalogs.
