Wang Jinming was a native of Xi'an during the reign of Emperor Shizong of the Ming Dynasty. At the age of 17, he rescued a Taoist priest who was drowning, took him home, and treated him with great respect. The Taoist priest then taught Wang all his secret methods, after which Wang retreated to live in seclusion in the Zhongnan Mountains.

Emperor Shizong of the Ming Dynasty was fond of immortal practices and alchemical arts. Having heard of Wang Jinming's reputation, he issued an imperial edict summoning Wang into the palace. Wang elaborated on the essence of the "Three-Yuan Great Elixir" and refined elixirs to present to the emperor.

Wang Jinming was renowned on a par with Tao Zhongwen and Shao Shijie, and received exceptional favor from the emperor.

After Emperor Shizong passed away, Wang was exiled to the coastal areas of Fujian. There, he helped the people with medicine and Taoist talisman techniques, gaining considerable fame.

Later, he returned to live in Kaifeng, where he eventually passed away.
