The Wang Laozhi 王老志

The Wang Laozhi 王老志

Paul Peng

Wang Laozhi (?-1122)

Wang Laozhi was a native of Linquan, Puzhou (present-day Lin County, Shanxi Province) at the end of the Northern Song Dynasty.
In his youth and prime, he served as a local official in the county. After encountering Zhong Liquan, a Daoist immortal, who imparted to him Daoist doctrines and practices, he abandoned his official post and embraced Daoism.

In the 3rd year of the Zhenghe era (1113), he was summoned to the imperial capital. He often wore a feathered Daoist robe and guided the emperor’s imperial carriage during royal outings. The emperor bestowed upon him the title "Mr. Guanmiao Mingzhen Dongwei" (literally meaning "Master of Observing Subtlety, Manifesting Truth, and Penetrating the Profound").
