The Wang Shan 王善

The Wang Shan 王善

Paul Peng
Wang Shan (1100~1125) lived during the reign of Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty. He was the second-generation disciple of Lin Lingsu and once studied Taoist talisman techniques under Sa Shoujian, a native of Shu (an ancient name for the Sichuan region).
According to Taoist legends, after his death, he was conferred the title "Xiantian Zhujiang" (Prime General of the Primordial Heaven) by the Jade Emperor, and was entrusted with the duty of supervising and inspecting both the celestial realm and the human world.

During the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty, he was granted the title "Long'en Zhenjun" (True Lord of Abundant Grace) and was also known as "Yushu Huofu Tianjiang" (Heavenly General of the Jade Pivot Fire Mansion). As a guardian deity worshipped in Taoism, an imperial decree was issued to build the "Tianjiang Temple" (Temple of Heavenly Generals) in his honor; during the Xuande era, this temple was rebuilt and renamed "Huode Guan" (Taoist Temple of Fire Virtue).
In Taoism, he is known as Wang Lingguan, the martial deity who guards the gates of Taoist temples. He is depicted as having a majestic and powerful physique, a red face, three eyes, wearing armor, and holding a whip—symbols of his impartiality in enforcing Taoist precepts and divine laws.
